Preventing Mold & Mildrew Growth in your Bathroom
Nobody wants to deal with mold issues and when it comes to bathrooms, it seems like it’s the least favorite room for homeowners to clean. However, dust, dirt, grime, and moisture sitting on your bathrooms surfaces can lead to mold and mildew.
Bathrooms should be cleaned weekly, but there’s also little things that can be done daily that can help make that weekly cleanup seem less daunting.
Daily:
- After a shower, squeegee your tiles to remove the excess water
- Keep the shower stall door or curtain open after a shower for at least 10 minutes to help exhaust the humidity that has built up inside
- Close the shower curtain afterwards to help dry them so moisture doesn’t get trapped when they are bunched up when closed
- Empty garbage bins every other day. Think of what gets thrown out: wet naps, damp paper towels, Kleenex, tissue paper, etc. After a few days, your garbage bin can start to get musty and moldy
- Hang towels right away after a bath or shower. Leaving them on the floor can lead to musty odors
- Run your exhaust fans or open windows during your shower and keep them open/on afterwards for at least 20 minutes
Weekly:
- Toilet bowls
- Shower head; build-up can occur causing mold and clogging, preventing you from having a relaxing shower experience.
- Counters and sinks
- Walls and floors; dust, grime and hair is mold food when left on surfaces for too long
- Shower mats
- Replace hand and bath towels with fresh, clean linens
- Mirrors
- Door handles and faucets can hold onto bacteria
The main objective is to keep moisture levels to a minimum so not to create the perfect breeding ground for mold. By following these tips, you'll have a better control on minimizing mold growth.
If you do have mold, however, we can help. Call us at SERVPRO of Fall River for a free estimate 508-676-9100.

When homes are flooded and lives turned upside down, treasured possessions such as family heirlooms, photos, and other keepsakes become more cherished. These valued objects may be saved if untouched by sewage or chemicals. If cherished objects have been in contact with sewage or chemicals SERVPRO of Fall River can help.
- Personal safety is always the highest priority when entering buildings damaged by floodwater.
- Check for structural damage before re-entering your home to avoid being trapped in a building collapse.
- Keep power off until an electrician has inspected your system for safety.
- Turn off the gas. Be alert for gas leaks. Look before you step.
- After a flood, the ground and
floors are covered with debris, including broken bottles and nails. Floors and stairs that have been covered with mud can be very slippery. - Take photos of any floodwater in your home and of damaged items for insurance purposes.
- Call your insurance agent to file a claim and report the damage as soon as possible. Homeowners insurance usually covers losses caused by wind, storms, or broken water pipes, but not surface flooding.
- Rescue the most valuable items, but never attempt to salvage belongings at the expense of your own safety.
- Mold can form within 48 hours so we work quickly to lessen the damage. The goal is to reduce the humidity and temperature around your treasures as you proceed to clean and dry them.

Something Smells... Smelly
1/8/2020 (Permalink)
In our experience, smells are narrowed down to two basic categories: good smells, and bad smells. Good smells are the ones that come from candles, essential oils, perfumes, and our favorite foods. Bad smells, on the other hand, can come from anything such as smoke, urine and feces, rodent droppings, or worse, rodent decay, or even worse, human decay, or even worse…
Okay, you get it. Things that smell bad, smell… well, bad!
And sometimes you need an extra nose to know where the smell is actually coming from. Thankfully, the technicians at SERVPRO of Fall River can help. Not only can we confirm if the smell you’re smelling is a very bad, no good, smelly smell. We can also help remove the odor with our advanced technological equipment such as air scrubbers, thermal foggers, and deodorization agents.
Not only does this help remove powerful odors, but these machines also help us remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality in a given room.
If something smells… smelly, give us at SERVPRO of Fall River a call, and we’ll see if we can sniff it out for you. As always, we’re Here to Help.

How to tell if Your Hot Water Heater is going Bad
3/4/2019 (Permalink)
Bad to the Bone
Hot water heaters will typically last you between 10-15 years. When internal components become corroded and mineral build up occurs, your heater can begin to leak. Without correction, this small leak can turn into something more serious – and you may find yourself with a basement full of water. Below are some telltale signs that your hot water heater is on its way out, and some simple maintenance you can do to prevent disaster.
Check
Check for power if there is no hot water. While no hot water can be a sure sign that the water heater has failed, it could also mean the pilot light is out or the circuit breaker tripped.
Examine
Examine the water that comes out of the hot faucet. If it appears rusty, this signals an upcoming failure of your water heater. Look for signs of muddy water or increased sediment in the water tank. Attach a hose to the drainage bib on the water heater, turn the unit off and drain it to examine its contents. Muddy water or increased sediment signals a potential failure of your water heater. When flushing the water heater, remember that the water that comes out of the hose bib at the front of the water heater is going to be extremely hot, as it will not be mixed with cold water. Use caution when flushing the water heater to avoid getting burned. Smell or taste the water. If the hot water has a metallic taste to it, this indicates that the water heater is close to breaking down.
Listen
Pay attention to the noises your water heater makes. While there will be normal sounds as the water heats, loud cracks and pops indicate an interaction between the heating elements inside the heater and the scale and mineral deposits built up on them.
Address
Take immediate action if you see leaking water around the water heater where none has leaked before. Disconnect the electricity or turn off the gas to the unit and let the water cool down before attempting to remove and replace the water heater. Leaking water indicates an internal failure in the water heater.

Donation Drive- Fall River, MA 02724
1/15/2019 (Permalink)
SERVPRO helping local fire victims by becoming a drop off location.
As a community, we help each other out. Whether it be lending sugar to our neighbor or giving the elderly woman downstairs a ride to her doctor’s appointment. When disaster strikes however, that’s when it seems that we really come together! Recently there was a large apartment complex fire that occurred in Fall River. Over 80 people were displaced and had nothing but the clothes on their backs. With no building left to rebuild, there wasn’t much for us here at SERVPRO of Fall River to do. We wanted to still lend a hand, so we decided that we would offer our location as a donation drop off site.
Only two days into doing so, we had such an outpouring of support! A large number of items were brought to us that the displaced families were in desperate need of. Families, businesses and organizations alike donated items such as toiletries, toys, diapers, gift cards, clothing and much more. They were thinking about what it is that they use in their everyday routine, and were dropping them off by the car and truck full! It was a beautiful sight and a great feeling to see that the community was coming together to help.
As the need continues, we are still receiving calls and emails on how people can help. SERVPRO of Fall River, many other businesses, yes the community as a whole is making sure that these victims are not going through this alone. May we all continue to do our part to make sure the victims of this tragedy see a light at the end of the tunnel and may they have comfort in knowing that we are all here to help them in their time of need.
