Trouble in your Basement!

Here at SERVPRO of Fall River we often receive calls from homeowners puzzled as to why there is a puddle in their basement; where did it came from?  Basement foundations are made of cement/concrete which is porous in nature. Even with a sound foundation water can seep into your basement. Heavy bursts of rain, or accumulation of rainwater over a few consecutive days, can quickly overwhelm the soil surrounding your homes foundation. Like a sponge, the ground's soil is only able to absorb so much precipitation before it finds somewhere else to go. Ground water will take the path of least resistance and unfortunately mixed with the added pressure will find least resistance through your foundation walls.

This happens more so if there are any structural weak points such as tie rod holes that were improperly patched or left open. A perfectly sound, average sized foundation will let in approximately 15 GALLONS of water PER DAY. Now imagine if there is a crack or the surrounding exterior soil was recently backfilled. These factors will lead water to/through your foundation walls faster.
