Many fires are preventable and by following a few guidelines, we can help keep each other safe.
Did you know that older adults (people 65+) are most at risk of dying in a fire in MA. Seniors account for nearly 1/2 of all fire deaths.
Some useful tips if you’re a smoker:
-Smoke outdoors
- Use a large sturdy ashtray or tin can filled with sand
- Be sure matches & smoking materials are fully extinguished
- Never extinguish cigarettes in potted plants or mulch
- If drowsy or falling asleep, put your cigarette out. NEVER smoke in bed
Heating and electrical fire are also leading causes of death to older adults at home. Remember to:
- Have furnaces & chimneys cleaned & inspected each year
- Keep 3 feet of space free of clutter & things that can catch fire around furnaces, hot water heaters, fireplaces & wood stoves
- Keep space heaters 3 feet away from everything that can burn.
Be sure to check on elderly family and neighbors.
