It can be exciting planning a February vacation. Getting away from the ordinary routine and escaping to paradise a week sounds like plenty of fun! However, you want to make sure you're coming back to the home exactly like you left it. This is why we at SERVPRO of Fall River suggest taking these precautions to keep your home safe. Below you can find tips on how to protect your vacant home.
- Ask a friend or family member to frequently check on your home for any possible damages.
- Install timers that systematically turn on and off your interior/exterior lights.
- Leave your curtains and/or window coverings as it’s normally kept.
- Don’t forget to lock all the windows and doors, including the garage door
- Unplug all irrelevant appliances to protect your home from an electrical fire or power surge.
- Consider investing in a security system with cameras for recording and viewing.
- Shut off the main water supply valve next to your water meter. If you’ve turned off the water supply, drain your pipes of all water.
- If your water supply remains on, have your house-sitter stop by and let water drip slowly from exterior faucets when temperatures are low. This prevents pipes from freezing and rupturing while you’re away.
- Another preventable tip to frozen pipes is to keep your thermostat at 55 degrees or higher.
